Ear Candling...

Ear Candling is not a new alternative therapy. Dating back to the year 2500 B.C. there is evidence showing that people used and were familiar with the practice of ear candling. Ancient cultures, including the Egyptians, made reference to its use. Parchment scrolls discovered in the Orient, also have described the procedure for ear candling.

This ancient therapeutic art may have been developed with the domestication of the honeybee. Beeswax was -- and still is -- a key component to making the hollow cylinders used in the procedure. The principal cloth used by ancient Egyptians was linen made from flax (the fibers of an annual blue-flowered plant). The candles are hollow and approximately 8-10" long. They are hand made of 100% cotton and pure beeswax.

Candling applies simple laws of science. The flame of the candle (when the candle is properly seated in the ear) creates a draw or vacuum which pulls the wax, fungus, candida, yeast, and other particles of debris out of the ear and up into the bottom of the candle. The vacuum is caused by the warmed air from the flame and the colder existing air moving through the hollow chamber of the candle. The movement and compression between the ear canal and the candle chamber generate air flow with increasing velocity, thus producing the "sucking" vacuum.

As the particles are drawn from the ear and into the bottom of the candle, the air flow becomes disrupted. This is why it is important to remove the candle and "tap out" the contents.

Why candle? The purpose of candling is to remove wax buildup, especially the heavy impacted wax that normal cleaning cannot remove. Candling is a more comfortable and less expensive alternative to the traditional cleaning method of forcing water into the ear canal.

Candling is also believed to remove candida, yeasts, fungus, and remnants of past infections. The Ear, Nose and Throat Journal of U of U Medical lab reported that the types of bacteria we currently fight in our ears include Streptococcus pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, Anaerobic bacteria, and Influenza A and B.

Though ear candling may not be the answer to all ear, sinus, or throat problems, people have used it to relieve symptoms of itching, congestion, and discomfort associated with eye, ear, nose, and throat ailments. With the long tradition of use around the world, ear candling should continue it's popularity to help people in a natural and effective way.

What is a session like?

Lying on your side, or in an upright position, a lit earcandle is placed into the ear, creating a gentle soft flow of warmth and smoke that flows into the ear drying the ear out while softening old ear wax and soothing the ear. The process is overall very soothing, relaxing, and non-invasive at no point does the lit earcandle or the ear ever touch. The process can take anywhere from 8-30 minutes per ear, based on the size and thickness or the candle and certain herbal essential oils which are useful in relieving some symptoms accompaning colds, flu and sinus congestion.

What are the benefits of earcandling?

1. It acts to aid your ears by clearing out debris and earwax that has accumulated over the years.

2. People have experienced improved hearing, head feeling lighter, more sensitivity to sounds of tones.

3. Earcandling can soothe and relieve people and pets from ear infections, ringing in the ears, hearing loss, dizziness, candida, yeast or fungus infections, parasites, or "swimmers ear".

4. Some people may experience a sense of wellness and freshness.

5. Many cases of relief from headache causing sinus or allergy problems.

Q: Does Ear candling hurt?
A: Absolutely not! It is a painless, harmless and totally relaxing experience. If it weren't for the intermittent crackling and hissing sounds... due to the burning of the wax and fungus being drawn up the chimney of the candle... you would never know anything was happening in your ear.

Q: How long does an ear candling session last?
A: About forty-five minutes per session, however you should allow one hour for your appointment.

Q: How often should I have ear candling done?
A: Initially, most people need just 2 or 3 sessions to get their ears clean... However, some may need up to eight sessions over a six month period. Once your ears are clean, personal preference should determine how often you ear candle for maintenance... probably every three to six months would be practical.

Q: Who can benefit from ear candling?
A: Ear candling can benefit almost everyone, from infants to adults. Musicians can benefit, especially singers and horn blowers who often have a lot more wax build up than others. People who wear hearing aids, or those who have had previous ear injuries, as they tend to have a greater build up of fungus and/or scar tissue.

Q: Who should not have ear candling done?
A: Ear candling should not be done to people who have ear tubes, perforated eardrums, or artificial eardrums.

Disclaimer: Earcandling should not be used as a substitute for medical diagnosis and treatment. If you have a serious ear disease, tubes in your ears, eardrum damage, or an upper respiratory infection, please consult a physician before attempting earcandling.
